The short answer

Most stand-alone English courses do not pay for themselves with a job. GOV.UK bans work on visitor and Short-term study visas. Ireland Stamp 2 allows 20 hours a week in term time. Australia subclass 500 allows 48 hours a fortnight after the ELICOS course starts. New Zealand can allow 25 hours if the English course meets published tests. South Africa language visas usually have no general work rights. Price the stay as if you will not earn.

Work rights by English-study destination

UK visitor and Short-term study: no work. Ireland Stamp 2: 20 hours term time. Australia subclass 500: 48 hours a fortnight in session. New Zealand student visa: up to 25 hours if the English course meets Immigration NZ tests. Malta Schengen short stay: not a work permit. Canada visitor ESL under 6 months: no student work. United States F-1 ESL: not a job-funding plan. South Africa language visa: usually no general work.

The trap of funding rent with hoped-for hours

Schools sometimes hint that students 'usually find a café job'. That is not a visa condition. If work is illegal, the job puts the visa at risk. If work is legal, hours still fail in expensive cities. Build the budget with zero wages, then treat work as optional.

Cape Town when you do not need a job

Cape Town is the cheaper native-English option because you are not trying to earn the fees back. EnglishHubSA's cost guide puts living costs, excluding tuition, around USD 700–1,100 a month. Pick Ireland or Australia only if the work concession is a real requirement you will follow. Pick Cape Town if the requirement is class hours and a lower invoice.

Questions families ask

Frequently asked questions

Can I work on a South Africa language-course visa?

Generally no. Do not copy Ireland or Australia hours onto a Cape Town English course. Internship hours must be on the visa if they exist at all.

Where do I confirm each country's work rule?

GOV.UK, irishimmigration.ie, Study Australia subclass 500, Immigration NZ 'Working on a student visa', Identità, IRCC, and Study in the States. Read the visa grant, not a WhatsApp group.

Dear Vivi, I am writing to express all my gratitude and love that I will feel forever for this school. I wanted you to know that Avenue English easily became my favorite place (even with so many beautiful places here) because the school always was full of the kindest, most caring and loving people I've ever met. Thank you so much for the opportunity to develop so much and broaden my worldview. I'll always remember this months with all my soul. With love (and "saudade")Bea Valente · Brazil
