How long to study English abroad: 3, 6 or 12 months

The short answer
Book 3 months if you need a taster and a visitor-style visa. Book 6 months if you want real progress and can handle a study visa. Book 12 months if English has to become a work language. Longer stays usually cost less per week. They also trigger heavier immigration files in the UK, Ireland, Australia, Malta, and South Africa. Cape Town is often the cheaper place to stay longer.

What a 3-month English course is for
Three months is a level jump and a lifestyle test, not fluency. Visas are lighter: UK Standard Visitor, Schengen or visa-exempt Malta, New Zealand visitor study, South Africa visitor or visa-exempt entry. Australia still wants a subclass 500 for full-time ELICOS. Use 3 months to see whether you will actually attend class abroad.
What changes at 6 months
Six months is where visitor products end in several countries. The UK moves from Standard Visitor to Short-term study visa after 6 months. South Africa already needs a study visa after 90 days. Malta needs a D visa from 105 days. Ireland Stamp 2 English programmes often run about 8 months. Budget visa lead time, not only tuition.
Why 12 months is usually better value per week
Schools discount long enrolments. Housing settles. Progress compounds. A 12-month UK stay needs a Student visa with a licensed sponsor, not Short-term study, because Short-term study stops at 11 months.
