UK visitor visa to study English for 3–6 months: 2026 checklist

How a 3-month or 6-month English course in the UK sits on the Standard Visitor route: accredited schools, visitor fees, ETA, and why you cannot work.

The short answer

A UK English course of 6 months or less is a Standard Visitor activity, not a student visa. GOV.UK allows study at an accredited institution for up to 6 months, including English language courses. The short visit visa fee is £135 from 8 April 2026. Some nationalities need an Electronic Travel Authorisation instead of a visit visa. Standard Visitors cannot work.

Why a 3-month English course is a visitor trip

GOV.UK treats English study of 6 months or less as a Standard Visitor activity at an accredited institution. A 3-month course sits inside that cap. The Short-term study visa starts only when the English course is longer than 6 months. Do not buy an 8-month course and hope to enter as a visitor.

Who needs a UK visit visa and who uses ETA

Some passports need a Standard Visitor visa before travel. Other passports use an Electronic Travel Authorisation, and some still need neither for a short visit. GOV.UK's visa checker is the only reliable split by nationality. A visit visa for up to 6 months costs £135 from 8 April 2026 on the Home Office fee table.

Proof a UK language school must give you

GOV.UK requires acceptance onto a course of no more than 6 months at an accredited UK institution. A UK academy or state-funded school cannot run this visitor English course. Get the offer in writing, with start date, end date, weekly hours, and the accreditor name. Border officers look for a genuine visit, so show funds and a return plan as well.

Work, switching, and overstaying a visitor stay

A Standard Visitor cannot work or take a work placement while studying English. You cannot switch in the UK to a Short-term study visa or Student visa. If the course needs more than 6 months, apply for the correct study route from outside the UK before you fly.

Cape Town as a cheaper 3-month alternative

A 3-month English immersion in Cape Town often lands between USD 4,000 and 7,000 all-in, including tuition, homestay, and living costs. EnglishHubSA's Cape Town city page publishes that USD 4,000–7,000 band. Many 3-month Cape Town courses can use a visitor visa or visa-exempt entry, depending on passport. Confirm the 90-day line with the Cape Town language school before you pay. Cape Town's trade-offs are neighbourhood safety habits and a longer flight from Europe.

Questions families ask

Frequently asked questions

Can I study English for 11 months on a UK visitor visa?

No. GOV.UK caps visitor study at 6 months. An 11-month English course needs the Short-term study visa.

Can I work part-time on a UK visitor visa while I study English?

No. Standard Visitors cannot work. Do not budget London rent against a café job.

If I am visa-exempt, can I just fly in for a 3-month course?

Only if GOV.UK says your nationality can visit without a visa, and you still meet Standard Visitor rules, including an accredited course of 6 months or less. Check ETA requirements as well.

Where do I confirm the current visitor-study rule?

Read GOV.UK 'Visit the UK as a Standard Visitor: Visit to study' and the GOV.UK visa checker for your passport.
