Visa
Visitor visa or student visa for an English course abroad?
A decision guide for 2026: when a language course is a visitor stay and when it needs a student visa, covering the UK, Malta, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand and the US.

The short answer
A short English course is often a visitor product. A long one is a student-visa product. The split is 6 months in the UK, 90 days in South Africa, 90 or 105 days in Malta, 6 months in Canada, 3 months in New Zealand, and almost immediately F-1 in the United States for SEVP schools. Do not buy the course length first and the visa second. Check the official threshold for that country, then pay the school.

Official length thresholds by country
United Kingdom: 6 months or less is Standard Visitor; over 6 months to 11 months is Short-term study; longer needs a Student visa. South Africa: over 90 days needs a study visa. Malta: 90 days Schengen, 105+ days Identità D visa. Canada: 6 months or less can be without a study permit. New Zealand: visitor study up to 3 months. United States: SEVP English programmes need F-1, not B-2.
The safe order: visa product, then school deposit
Pick the country and the number of weeks. Match that length to the official visa name. Ask the language school which letter it issues for that visa. Only then pay a deposit you can recover if the visa is refused. Schools that reverse that order are selling seats, not immigration outcomes.
Where Cape Town sits on the visitor-or-student line
A 3-month Cape Town course often fits visitor or visa-exempt entry. A 6–12 month course needs a South African study visa before you fly. That file is heavier than a UK visit visa and lighter than a US F-1 package. The payoff is the lower invoice. Read EnglishHubSA's South Africa study-visa guide before you book 26 weeks.
Questions families ask
Frequently asked questions
Can I arrive as a visitor and switch to a student visa?
Usually no. The UK, South Africa, and Malta all make this hard or impossible. The United States forbids studying on B status before a change is approved. Assume you must get the right visa first.
Which EnglishHubSA visa guide should I open next?
UK visitor, UK Short-term study, Malta Schengen, South Africa study visa, Ireland Stamp 2, Australia ELICOS, Canada study permit, US F-1, or New Zealand student visa — match the country you are actually considering.
