South Africa study visa for an English course: the 90-day line (2026)

When a Cape Town English course needs a visitor visa versus a Section 13 study visa: documents, VFS timing, work rights, and why you should not convert status in South Africa.

The short answer

An English course of 90 days or less in South Africa is usually a visitor stay, with a school letter if you apply for a visitor visa. A course longer than three months needs a Section 13 study visa issued before you fly. Department of Home Affairs forms ask for an acceptance letter, a principal's undertaking, South African medical-scheme cover, police clearance, and proof of funds. Language-course study visas do not usually include general work rights.

Visitor visa or study visa at 90 days

South African Immigration Regulations treat studies not exceeding three months as a visitor-visa file, with an undertaking from the registrar or principal. Many passports enter visa-exempt for a short visit; that is not permission to stay for a 6-month course. Any English course longer than three months needs a study visa. Count calendar days with the Cape Town language school, not marketing '12-week' labels.

Study visa documents Home Affairs actually lists

Form DHA-1738 (Form 8) is the study-visa application. Attach an official acceptance letter with course duration and the learning institution's registrar undertaking. Police clearance is required. Medical cover must be with a scheme registered under the Medical Schemes Act, not a foreign travel policy. Learners under 18 need an unabridged birth certificate, parental consent, and a South African guardian letter.

How long a South Africa study visa takes

Apply through VFS Global or the South African mission in your country of residence before you travel. EnglishHubSA advises families to allow 8–12 weeks from a complete file to a decision, longer around December and January. Police clearance alone can take several weeks. Do not buy non-refundable flights until the visa is in the passport.

Do not arrive as a visitor and convert locally

Do not arrive as a visitor and convert locally to a study visa. South Africa restricts in-country change of status. A refused conversion means leaving and starting again. Language schools that suggest you 'sort the visa after you land' are selling a course, not a legal plan. If the course is over 90 days, get the study visa first.

Work rights versus the Cape Town price advantage

A study visa issued for a language course does not usually carry general work rights. Internship hours must be endorsed on the visa before travel if they exist at all. Cape Town still undercuts London, Dublin, Malta, and Sydney on tuition plus homestay for 3–12 months. Choose South Africa for cost and climate, not because you plan to earn the fees back.

Questions families ask

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a study visa for a 90-day English course in Cape Town?

Usually no. Courses not exceeding three months sit on the visitor route, or visa-exempt entry if your passport qualifies. Still carry the school's letter. Confirm with the mission, because passport rules differ.

Can I work on a South Africa language-course study visa?

Generally no. Do not copy Ireland's Stamp 2 hours or Australia's 48-hour fortnight onto a South African English course.

Will travel insurance satisfy the study visa?

No. Home Affairs asks for cover with a South African-registered medical scheme for the study period.

Where do I confirm the current South Africa rule?

Use Department of Home Affairs immigration regulations on study visas, DHA-1738, and the VFS or mission checklist for your country. Rules and processing times change.
