الإجابة المختصرة

The UAE has the easiest access to South Africa in the Gulf: Emirates flies Dubai to Cape Town and Johannesburg non-stop in about nine hours, with no meaningful time difference. A three-month English immersion costs roughly AED 15,000-22,000 all-in, and Emirati passport holders receive visa-free entry for short visits, though a study visa is still required for courses over 90 days. Applications are made through VFS in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

The direct-flight advantage

Nine hours non-stop from Dubai changes the calculation for parents. A family can fly down for a mid-course visit over a long weekend, and a student who is struggling in week two is never more than a day from home. Emirates and FlyDubai between them cover Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban; fares are lowest in May, June and September, and peak sharply around the December school holidays.

Budgets in dirhams

Three months: tuition AED 5,200-8,800, homestay AED 4,800-7,000, living costs AED 2,000-3,000, visa and medical AED 900-1,500, flights AED 2,200-3,800. Twelve months typically lands between AED 55,000 and AED 78,000, still below a single academic year at most UK language schools.

A note for expatriate residents

If you hold a UAE residence visa on an Indian, Pakistani, Egyptian, Jordanian or Filipino passport, your South African visa requirements follow your passport, not your residence. You can usually apply from the UAE if your residence permit has at least six months left. Confirm this with VFS before booking flights, as it is the single most common reason Gulf-based families lose a deposit.

أسئلة تطرحها العائلات

الأسئلة الشائعة

Are there direct flights from Abu Dhabi?

Etihad serves Johannesburg directly; Cape Town is usually a one-stop via Dubai or Johannesburg, adding roughly three hours.

Can my teenager travel alone?

Yes, with notarised parental consent, an unabridged birth certificate and a school-issued guardianship letter. Most schools accept students from 16, some from 14 with a junior programme.

Is Johannesburg or Cape Town better?

Cape Town for first-time students: smaller, more walkable, stronger school density and a larger Muslim community. Johannesburg suits students who want business English and internship exposure.
