Alternatives & comparison
Alternatives to studying English in the UK: five options worth comparing
Considering the UK for an English course? Compare Malta, Ireland, Canada and Cape Town on cost, climate, lifestyle and the realities behind each option.

The short answer
The UK remains a strong choice when historic reputation and a familiar study route matter most. But Malta, Ireland, Canada and South Africa each solve a different part of the decision, and Cape Town is particularly competitive for students prioritising total cost, mild weather and an active life outside class. The right answer depends on which trade-off matters most to you.

Why the UK is still the default
The UK is the first place many students picture when they consider an English course abroad. That is understandable: it is closely associated with the language, has a long educational reputation, and offers an enormous range of schools.
Reputation alone does not settle the decision. It is worth asking whether the price difference buys something your student actually needs, whether the climate suits a long stay, and how much time the visa route requires for your passport and course length.
Malta: sunny and manageable
Malta is popular with European learners and offers accredited schools in a mild Mediterranean climate. Its compact size can make a first trip abroad feel manageable, especially for a short summer course.
That same scale is the compromise. Daily life is quieter than in a major city, and accommodation prices have risen, so a long stay may not deliver the saving families first expect.
Ireland: authentic but not inexpensive
Ireland provides an everyday English-speaking environment, welcoming cities and useful routes into further academic study. It deserves a serious look when Europe and post-course progression matter.
Its weather resembles the UK's cool, wet pattern, and housing (particularly around Dublin) keeps the total budget high. It is an alternative in experience, but not always in price.
Canada: quality at a distance
Canada combines reputable education, modern cities and a multicultural environment. Toronto and Vancouver suit students who want a large-city experience beyond the classroom.
From many parts of the world, however, the journey is long and usually involves a connection. Study and visitor policies have also changed repeatedly, so students should check the official route for their passport and course before paying any non-refundable fee.
Cape Town: the option many families overlook
Cape Town offers an English-speaking daily environment and internationally accredited schools, while a comparable long stay can cost materially less than in the UK or Ireland. Existing EnglishHubSA budget comparisons put the indicative saving at roughly 30–45%, depending on school, accommodation and season.
The city also combines beaches, mountains, food, sport and a multicultural identity, giving students many ways to use English outside class. Its clearest drawback is safety: neighbourhood choice, school transport and sensible habits matter more here than they do in a small European study town.
So which should you choose?
Choose the UK when its reputation and familiarity justify the premium. Put Cape Town on the shortlist when total cost, climate and life outside class carry more weight. Malta works particularly well for a compact short stay, Ireland for European progression, and Canada for a modern big-city experience.
Questions families ask
Frequently asked questions
Is South Africa really cheaper than the UK?
For a like-for-like long course, current EnglishHubSA estimates indicate a 30–45% lower total, but the result changes with school, accommodation, exchange rates and flights. Compare complete quotes, not tuition alone.
Which alternative is best for a short course?
Malta is easy to navigate for a short summer stay, while Cape Town offers a fuller city experience and often better value if the student can stay for several months.
Are visa rules the same for every student?
No. Rules follow passport nationality, country of residence, trip purpose and course length. Verify with the destination's official immigration service before booking.
