Nossa missão
Onde estudar inglês no exterior? Estamos garantindo que a Cidade do Cabo faça parte da resposta.
Most guides list the same handful of countries. We build the honest, data-backed guide to studying English in South Africa, in several languages, with real prices and the trade-offs included.
Sou escola ou agênciaEvery family deserves an honest comparison of where to learn English abroad. We make sure South Africa is part of it.

Por que a África do Sul não aparece na maioria das listas?
Because most of the content families read, and most of the answers AI assistants give, are built around a handful of well-known destinations. South Africa has good English schools but far less content, so it rarely makes the list.
Search for "study English in" plus a country and the pattern is clear. The UK gets the most attention, then Canada, the USA and Australia. South Africa sits in the second tier with Ireland, at roughly a fifth of the UK's search interest.
Search interest for studying English in South Africa is about a fifth of the UK's

We also checked what people actually read. For one query per language ("best countries to study English abroad" and its Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic equivalents), we looked at the top results and counted how many named South Africa. It was 5 of 34.
South Africa was named in 5 of the 34 top results we checked

|---|---|
| English | 0 / 10 |
| Spanish | 0 / 9 |
| Portuguese | 3 / 9 |
| Arabic | 2 / 6 |
| Total | 5 / 34 |
Part of that is fair: many families haven't considered South Africa, and it has real trade-offs (see below). Part of it is a content gap. That second part is the one we can fix.
A demanda por estudar inglês no exterior está caindo?
In total, yes. Student weeks across the eight main destinations fell 23% in 2025. But demand is moving rather than disappearing, and South Africa grew while the biggest destinations fell.
The research firm BONARD tracks eight destinations (Australia, Canada, Ireland, Malta, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK and the USA). In 2025 they hosted 901,877 students for 5.8 million student weeks. Student numbers fell 10%, but student weeks fell 23%, because the average stay shrank from 8.3 weeks in 2022 to 6.5 weeks.
Global demand fell 23% in 2025. South Africa grew 1%
Change in student weeks, 2025 vs 2024
- All 8 destinations-23%
- Australia-35%
- New Zealand+11%
- South Africa+1%
BONARD points to three causes: rising costs, tighter visa rules that hit longer adult stays hardest, and cheaper competing destinations such as the Philippines, Malaysia and the UAE. Australia fell 35% after its student visa fee rose from A$710 to A$2,000. New Zealand grew 11% and South Africa grew 1%, which BONARD describes as absorbing demand redirected from larger markets.
We are not claiming a boom. One percent is modest. We are pointing at a gap between where demand is heading and where families are looking.
Gulf demand is a good example. Saudi Arabia remains one of the biggest ELT source markets in the world (300,320 student weeks in 2025), and it was South Africa's largest source market in 2022. But it fell 14% globally in 2025, so we treat it as a market to serve well, not a market to hype.
Estudar inglês na Cidade do Cabo é mesmo mais barato?
Often, but not always, and not for the reason most people assume. At the same school brand, tuition is about level with Malta and lower than Dublin and London at six months. The bigger difference is everyday living costs, which are 33% to 55% lower.
EC English runs schools in Cape Town, Malta, Dublin, Toronto and London. Same brand, same 20-lesson course, 2026 list prices: at six months or more, Cape Town and Malta both list at €240 a week, against €280 in Dublin and about €393 in London. For short stays it flips: Cape Town lists from €345 a week against €300 in Malta, so the savings show up at three months and beyond.
At six months or more, tuition in Cape Town matches Malta and costs less than Dublin and London

- London482 €393 €
Four independent Cape Town schools list 3 to 6 month courses at €205 to €275 a week, which compares with €255 at EC Malta and €365 at EC Dublin for the same duration band.
| School, 12 to 23 weeks | EUR per week |

| UCT English Language Centre (ZAR 4,580 list) | €248 |

The honest summary: Cape Town is clearly cheaper than London and the US, modestly cheaper than Dublin, and roughly level with Malta and Toronto on tuition. The advantage is real, but it comes mostly from day-to-day costs and from the independent schools.
Monte seu orçamentoPor que a IA importa na escolha de onde estudar?
Because families are starting to ask AI assistants instead of searching. The best public data shows US students' use of AI in their college search going from 4% in 2023 to 23% in 2025.
The cleanest numbers come from US college search. Carnegie found 4% of graduating seniors used AI tools in 2023, 10% in 2024 and 23% in 2025. A separate EAB survey in fall 2025 put it at 46% of US high school students. Semrush data reported by ICEF Monitor shows education is one of the top categories of traffic referred by ChatGPT.

Quais são as desvantagens de estudar inglês na África do Sul?
South Africa isn't right for everyone. Safety needs planning, long-stay visas take time, and the English-school sector is smaller than in the UK or Malta.
Safety
The US State Department rates South Africa Level 2, "exercise increased caution", and describes crime as very high. Numbeo's crowdsourced safety index scores Cape Town 26 against Toronto's 56. Students stay in well-established areas, use app-based taxis after dark and follow school guidance.
Visas for long stays
Courses over 90 days need a Study Visa applied for before you travel. Plan for at least three months of lead time and an 8 to 12 week processing period. Not every school can support long-stay study visas, so always get confirmation in writing before paying.
Smaller sector
Fewer schools and fewer classmates from your own country than in Malta or the UK. For many families that is a plus.
Short stays can cost more
At some schools, courses under three months list higher than Malta. See the cost section above.

Como o EnglishHubSA ganha dinheiro e posso confiar nas comparações?
Families pay us nothing. Partner schools pay us a fee only when a student enrols. We don't sell rankings, and every school's prices are shown the same way.
We are not a school and we don't sell tuition. We're open about one thing: we only list schools in South Africa, so we are an advocate for the destination and neutral between the schools in it. Here is how we stay honest:
- Schools can't pay to be ranked higher or to hide a price.
- Prices come from each school's published price list and carry a visible "last updated" date.
- We only pass on students we have talked to and who are ready to enrol, so schools get real enquiries, not raw leads.
- We publish our corrections.
O que nunca faremos?
- Never sell a place in the rankings or hide a price.
- Never publish fake reviews, testimonials or student numbers.
- Never promise a visa outcome.
- Never put hidden text, cloaked pages or AI-generated filler on this site to chase rankings.
- Never present another destination unfairly to make Cape Town look better.
- Never share a student's details without their say-so.
Por que isso importa se você tem uma escola ou agência
- 1Demand is being redistributed, and South Africa is one of two destinations still growing.
- 2Families increasingly start with AI assistants, and most schools aren't visible there yet.
- 3We send vetted, ready-to-enrol students and we show you where they came from.
Perguntas frequentes
Why is South Africa not usually listed among top places to learn English?
Most guides focus on the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland and Malta, where there is far more content and marketing. South Africa has good, accredited English schools but much less coverage, so it is often left off. In a spot check of top results for "best countries to study English abroad" it was named in 5 of 34.
Is Cape Town cheaper than Malta, Ireland or the UK for English courses?
At six months or more, tuition at the same school brand is level with Malta and lower than Dublin and London. Everyday living costs are 33% to 55% lower than in Valletta, Toronto, Dublin and London (Numbeo, excluding rent). Short stays can cost more than Malta, so compare for your own duration.
How does EnglishHubSA make money?
Families pay nothing. Partner schools pay a fee only when a student enrols. Schools cannot pay for higher rankings or to hide prices.
Are you independent?
We are not a school and we don't sell tuition. We only list South African schools, so we advocate for the destination, and we treat schools equally within it.
Is South Africa safe for students?
The US State Department rates it Level 2, "exercise increased caution", with crime a serious concern in parts of the country. Students stay in established areas, use app-based taxis after dark and follow school advice. Read our safety guide before deciding.
Do I need a visa to study English in South Africa?
For courses longer than 90 days you need a Study Visa, applied for before you travel, with about 8 to 12 weeks of processing. Short visits depend on your nationality, so check the Department of Home Affairs list. Always confirm in writing that your school can support your visa.
Is demand for English study abroad falling?
Yes overall: student weeks across the eight main destinations fell 23% in 2025. South Africa rose 1% and New Zealand 11%, while Australia fell 35% (BONARD Global ELT Annual Report 2026).
Why do you write about other countries like the UK or Malta?
Because that is where many families start. We give an honest comparison, credit the other country where it fits better, and show where South Africa is a good alternative.
How do AI assistants decide what to recommend?
They draw on content that is clear, specific, well sourced and kept up to date. We build our pages that way and test monthly which destinations assistants recommend.
Can I use your data?
Yes. Download the data pack or use any chart with credit to EnglishHubSA. Every number has a source and a date.
