# South Africa study visa for GCC students: the complete 2026 guide

*Visa · Updated 2026-08-01*

> Courses under 90 days can usually be done on a visitor visa, while any English course longer than three months requires a study visa applied for at a South African mission or VFS centre in your home country before travel. You will need an official acceptance letter from the school, proof of medical cover valid in South Africa, a police clearance certificate, and — for students under 18 — notarised parental consent and guardianship documents. Allow 8 to 12 weeks from application to decision.

## Visitor visa or study visa?

The dividing line is roughly 90 days. A short taster course of 4 to 12 weeks is normally possible on a visitor visa, and GCC passport holders are generally visa-exempt or eligible for a port-of-entry visitor permit. Anything longer — the 6 and 12 month immersion stays most families are researching — needs a study visa issued before you fly.

Do not plan to arrive on a visitor visa and convert it locally. South Africa restricts in-country change of status, and a refused change means leaving and starting again.

## Documents you will be asked for

Passport valid for at least 30 days beyond the course end date with two blank pages; the school's official acceptance and proof of paid fees; medical cover with a South African-registered scheme; a radiological report; a police clearance certificate for every country you lived in for 12 months or more since age 18; proof of funds for living costs; and return-flight evidence.

Under-18 applicants additionally need an unabridged birth certificate, notarised consent from both parents, and a letter from the appointed guardian in South Africa. Schools that accept teenagers issue the guardianship letter themselves — confirm this in writing before paying a deposit.

## Timeline and costs

Start four to five months before your intended start date. Police clearance alone can take six weeks. Apply at VFS Global on behalf of the South African mission in Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait City, Doha, Manama or Muscat; biometrics are in person. Budget for the visa fee, medical and radiological reports, document attestation and courier costs.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I work while studying English in South Africa?

A study visa issued for a language course does not usually carry general work rights. Internship components must be endorsed on the visa by the school before you travel.

### How long does the study visa take?

Plan for 8 to 12 weeks from submission, longer in the December-January peak.

### Does my child need a guardian?

Yes. Every student under 18 must have a named guardian resident in South Africa, normally supplied by the school with a signed guardianship letter.
