Muslim student life in Cape Town: mosques, halal food and Ramadan

Prayer facilities, halal-certified food, Ramadan and Eid in Cape Town, and the neighbourhoods where Gulf students feel most at home.

The short answer

Cape Town has been home to a Muslim community for over 350 years and has more than 150 mosques, including the historic Auwal Masjid in the Bo-Kaap. Halal certification is mainstream: major supermarket chains, fast-food outlets and hundreds of restaurants carry SANHA or MJC certification. Ramadan is publicly observed in several neighbourhoods, with communal iftars, and most language schools adjust class times for fasting students on request.

Prayer during the school day

Most Cape Town language schools sit within a ten-minute walk of a masjid, and schools in the City Bowl are close to the Bo-Kaap cluster. Even where there is no dedicated prayer room, schools routinely make a quiet office available at Dhuhr and Asr. Ask before enrolling and get the answer in writing, because a school that has never been asked may say yes casually and then have nowhere to offer.

Halal food, day to day

Checkers, Pick n Pay and Woolworths all stock certified halal meat, and Cape Malay cuisine (bobotie, denningvleis, koeksisters) is itself a halal culinary tradition. If you stay in homestay, state halal requirements at booking so the family shops accordingly; good schools match Gulf students with Muslim host families as standard.

Ramadan and Eid away from home

Fasting hours in Cape Town are shorter than in the Gulf during the southern winter, which many students find easier. Neighbourhood mosques run nightly taraweeh and community iftars that are open to visitors, and Eid is marked with large gatherings on the Sea Point promenade. Tell your school at enrolment if your stay covers Ramadan, because several move afternoon classes to the morning.

Questions families ask

Frequently asked questions

Are there mosques near the language schools?

Yes. The City Bowl, Sea Point, Rylands and Athlone all have mosques within easy walking or short ride distance of the main schools.

Can I request a Muslim host family?

Yes, and you should request it in writing at booking rather than on arrival, when placements are already fixed.

Is alcohol present in student housing?

In shared student residences it can be. Homestay with a Muslim family, or a school residence with a stated no-alcohol policy, avoids this.

“Dear Vivi, I am writing to express all my gratitude and love that I will feel forever for this school. I wanted you to know that Avenue English easily became my favorite place (even with so many beautiful places here) because the school always was full of the kindest, most caring and loving people I've ever met. Thank you so much for the opportunity to develop so much and broaden my worldview. I'll always remember this months with all my soul. With love (and "saudade")”Bea Valente · Brazil
